Did you know that dryer vent fires are more common than chimney fires? Flammable lint, and dirt and dust accumulate quite rapidly inside the dryer vent (the lint screen does not catch all of it).

Symptoms of a clogged dryer vent include excessive moisture in the laundry room and clothes take a long time to dry or won't dry at all. Sometimes birds build flammable nests at the top of dryer vents, which can also be a big problem.

Dryer vents and lint traps must be checked before every load. Make sure dryer vent flaps move and are not sticking due to lint or freezing shut due to water.

A blocked or dirty vent can cause a dryer to run hotter increasing the chance a fire. Heavy woolen and fleece clothes shed more lint so check lint traps regularly.

Cleaning must be done at least annually or more by a service technician e.g. chimney sweep if heavy use. Commercial buildings and residential buildings should be cleaned.
